This year, I celebrated my birthday in the most meaningful way imaginable — at St. Irene Orthodox Mission Centre and Orphanage in Kenya. What began as a simple visit quickly turned into one of the most touching and life-changing experiences of my life.

A Celebration of Faith, Friendship, and Love

One of the most profound blessings of the day was reuniting with a cherished friend who not only shares my faith but also my name day. Together, we celebrated in the company of our children, enveloped in laughter, prayer, and an abundance of love that filled the air. It was a moment steeped in divine connection, a clear reminder that God orchestrated every detail of that day for our joy and unity.

Cooking from a small, shabby kitchen structure, we helped prepare meals and serve the children. It wasn’t about luxury or comfort, it was about love, gratitude, and the joy of giving. Watching my friend interact with the kids, seeing their bright smiles and hearing their laughter, melted my heart. The children’s pure happiness, despite the humble surroundings, reminded me what true contentment looks like.

The Divine Liturgy celebrated with the children was deeply moving. Their little voices, lifted in prayer and song, filled the chapel with warmth and faith. It was impossible not to feel God’s presence there — among these innocent souls who have so little, yet give so much love in return.

A Mission of Hope Amid Challenges

St. Irene Mission Centre currently houses over 300 children — each with their own story of struggle, hope, and resilience. It’s a sanctuary of faith and compassion, but also a place of immense responsibility. I saw firsthand how Fr. Constantinos shoulders these challenges with grace and strength. He does everything possible to provide food, shelter, education, and spiritual care — all while trying to build permanent structures for the future.

Yet, it’s not easy. The support he receives is minimal, and without that little help, things could easily become unbearable. Balancing the daily needs of so many children with the long-term dream of building a permanent, sustainable home is a challenge only faith can sustain. And still, he carries on — smiling, praying, and serving.

A Call to Love and Support

If you haven’t supported this mission yet, please do. Every little contribution — no matter how small — makes a world of difference. These children deserve a chance to grow in love, faith, and dignity. Supporting St. Irene is not just an act of charity; it’s an act of faith, hope, and humanity.

As I left that evening, I felt an indescribable peace in my heart. I didn’t just celebrate a birthday — I witnessed love in its purest form. And for a moment, I truly felt that I was home… and here to stay.
