Becoming the Light of Christ – A Call to Action for All Christians
By Fr Constantinos
The recent gathering of the clergy at the Holy Annunciation parish in Kereita was a powerful reminder of the sacred calling of the priesthood and, by extension, the Christian life itself. His Eminence Archbishop Makarios Tillyrides spoke with wisdom and authority, calling us to reflect on our role as bearers of Christ’s message in a world that is often lost in confusion and darkness. As Christians, we are not merely followers of Christ in name, but we are called to be His hands and feet, embodying His teachings in every aspect of our lives. This means embracing love, humility, and obedience, ensuring that our faith is not just a private affair but a light that shines before others.
One of the key messages that resonated from the Archbishop’s address was the importance of living by example. Too often, we demand holiness from others while neglecting it in our own lives. As priests, we are called to be shepherds, but as Christians, we are all called to be models of ethical conduct, setting an example for those around us. Our speech, our actions, and even our thoughts should reflect the purity of the Gospel. We must ask ourselves daily: do people see Christ in us? If not, then it is time for sincere repentance and transformation.
Another vital lesson is the need for unity and forgiveness within the Christian community. It is disheartening when we harbor resentment and enmity among ourselves, for such divisions only weaken our mission. The Archbishop reminded us that forgiveness is not a sign of weakness but of great spiritual strength. We must break the chains of pride and embrace one another as true brothers and sisters in Christ. Only then can we reflect the message of the Gospel in its fullness and bring healing to our broken world.
Finally, we must recognize that the responsibility of carrying the cross of Christ is not limited to the clergy but is the duty of every believer. Whether in our homes, workplaces, or public spaces, we are ambassadors of the Orthodox Church and must uphold its teachings with faith and integrity. The world is watching, and our witness can either draw people to Christ or drive them away. Let us, therefore, renew our commitment to the faith, striving for holiness, unity, and love in all that we do. By doing so, we will truly become the light that Christ has called us to be, guiding others towards the Kingdom of God.
