Celebrating Mother’s Day at St. Irene Orthodox Mission Centre and Orphanage
On this special occasion of Mother’s Day, the air at St. Irene Orthodox Mission Centre and Orphanage fills with joy, gratitude, and deep reverence for the women who give selflessly every day. While many people across the world celebrate their biological mothers, we take time to honor the incredible women within our mission centre—those who take on the noble role of nurturing, guiding, and loving the children in our care.
From the early morning prayers to the festive songs echoing through our chapel, the entire day serves as a moving tribute to the spirit of motherhood. The children prepare heartfelt messages, poems, and songs to express their appreciation to the women who become mothers through love rather than biology. It is a beautiful reminder that motherhood transcends bloodlines—rooted instead in compassion, patience, and unwavering support.
Our staff and volunteers, many of whom are mothers themselves, are honored with flowers, prayers, and a warm meal prepared in celebration. Their tireless work often goes unnoticed, yet it forms the foundation upon which the lives of many vulnerable children are rebuilt.
We also remember mothers in our community—those facing hardship, those raising children alone, and those who show extraordinary strength in the face of adversity. Their resilience continues to inspire us, and through our mission, we support and uplift them as best as we can.
As the sun sets behind the hills of Njabini, laughter fills the air and smiles grace every face. Mother’s Day at St. Irene is not just a celebration; it is a testament to the power of love and the enduring strength of women who choose to give all they have for the sake of others.
To all mothers—biological, adoptive, spiritual, and symbolic—we honor you. You are the heart of our mission.
