On October 7, 2025, within the historic and sacred halls of the Patriarchal Headquarters in Alexandria, the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa convened in a spirit of joy and celebration. It was on this momentous day that they officially announced the elevation of His Grace Bishop Neofitos Kong’ai of Eldoret to the esteemed rank of Metropolitan. This pivotal decision not only marks a significant milestone in Bishop Neofitos’s own spiritual odyssey but also heralds a new chapter in the vibrant life of the Orthodox Church in Kenya, resonating across the entire African continent. The elevation is a testament to his devoted service and leadership, promising to inspire and strengthen the faith of countless believers in the region.
A Life Dedicated to God and the Church
His Grace Metropolitan Neofitos Kong’ai was born in 1970 in the quiet village of Kesengei, nestled in the Nandi district of Kenya. From a young age, he was known for his deep spirituality, humility, and a burning desire to serve the Lord. This calling led him to pursue theological studies at the Patriarchal Seminary of Archbishop Makarios III in Nairobi, a cradle of Orthodox learning in Africa that has nurtured countless clergy who now serve across the continent.
Following his formation, he was ordained a Deacon on September 13, 1998, and later that same month, on September 27, 1998, he was ordained a Presbyter by the then Metropolitan of Kenya, His Eminence Seraphim, who now serves as the Metropolitan of Zimbabwe and Angola. His early priestly years were marked by tireless service in several parishes within Nairobi, where he ministered with humility and dedication.
In recognition of his leadership and devotion, he was appointed Deputy Head of the Patriarchal Academy in Nairobi, where he played a vital role in mentoring young seminarians and advancing theological education. His exemplary pastoral work and commitment to the Orthodox faith led to his consecration as an Archimandrite on February 27, 2005, by His Eminence Makarios, Metropolitan of Kenya.
A Shepherd Close to His Flock
Throughout his ministry, Metropolitan Neofitos has embodied the true spirit of a shepherd—close to his flock, compassionate to the needy, and steadfast in faith. His leadership in Eldoret has brought renewed vitality to the Orthodox community in western Kenya, emphasizing education, missionary outreach, and the strengthening of parish life.
His Grace is known for his gentle demeanor, profound teaching, and genuine love for the people of God. His pastoral approach combines wisdom, discipline, and compassion, earning him respect and admiration across the Orthodox world.

Last year he concelebrated the Divine Liturgy with His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Kenya and Exarch of East Africa, leaving a lasting spiritual imprint on the community. His presence has always inspired faith, strengthened unity, and reminded all that true greatness lies in humble service to others.
