A New Year of Grace, a Daughter’s First Birthday, and a Call to Love
A compassionate appeal from St Irene Orthodox Mission Centre & Orphanage
Today, as the Holy Orthodox Church begins a new ecclesiastical year, my heart is full of prayer, gratitude, and responsibility. Today, we ask God to bless the labours of our hands, renew our hearts, and guide us into another year of service. For me, this day carries an even more tender meaning: my beloved daughter turns one year old today.
As a father, I look at her small hands, her growing smile, and the gift of life unfolding before my eyes. I thank God for protecting her through her first year. I pray for her future, for her health, for her faith, and for the love that will surround her as she grows. But as the father in charge and director of St Irene Orthodox Mission Centre & Orphanage, I cannot celebrate only my own child without remembering the many children God has placed in our care.
A Father’s Joy, A Mission’s Burden
Every child deserves to be welcomed into a world where there is food on the table, a safe place to sleep, clean clothes, education, medical care, and adults who speak words of hope over their lives. This is what I desire for my daughter. This is also what I desire for every child at St Irene.
Some of our children come to us after seasons of deep hardship. Some have lost parents. Some come from homes where poverty, sickness, hunger, or neglect have stolen the peace that childhood should know. Yet when they arrive at the mission, we do not see statistics. We see sons and daughters. We see the image of God. We see children who can laugh again, learn again, pray again, and dream again.
Why This Day Matters
The beginning of the ecclesiastical year reminds us that time itself is a gift from God. A new year is not only a date on the calendar; it is an invitation to live more faithfully, give more generously, and love more deeply. My daughter’s first birthday reminds me that a single year of care can change everything in a child’s life.
One year of meals can help a child grow stronger. One year of school support can open the door to literacy and confidence. One year of shelter can replace fear with stability. One year of prayer, affection, and guidance can teach a child that they are not forgotten.
